Internal Medicine Residency


Application Process:

The deadline for submission of a completed application is October 7, 2016, and all of the following items are required:
  • Dean's Letter
  • Chair's Letter (can be Chair designee).
  • At least 2 other Letters of Recommendation (you can submit up to 3 letters)
  • Medical School transcript
  • Personal Statement
  • Curriculum Vitae in ERAS format
  • USMLE Step 1 score of at least 205
  • Medical school graduation date of 2014 or later
  • 4 weeks of U.S. hands-on clinical experience within the past 6 months (observerships are excluded)
  • Valid ECFMG Certificate, if applicable

Interview Selection:

We know that interview season can be stressful for all involved, especially our applicants. In an effort to reduce some of that stress, we have added this section about our process in an effort to be as transparent as possible about our process.

Our interview season runs from mid -November to mid-January. Our first interview offers will be sent out sometime between October 10th and October 17th, 2016. Interview notification will occur via email.

Importantly, each interview offer will be good for at least 7 days. We will send out fewer offers than we have slots, meaning that each invited applicant should feel reassured that a slot will be available when they choose to respond within that 7 day period. If we have not heard from an invited applicant at 7 days, we will attempt to contact them via e-mail, but we may also invite another applicant off of a waiting list to take that spot.

We maintain a wait list and will periodically select applicants to interview from the list throughout the interview season. As some of those invitations occur because of short-notice cancellations, we may ask applicants invited off the wait list to respond in fewer than 7 days – if we do, we will clarify that in the invitation e-mail.

What all of this means is that our program does not support the additional pressures placed on applicants by inviting applicants for whom there are no slots available, and we want applicants to be reassured that there will be time to carefully consider the best time to interview with us. We respect your time and hope that this helps to clarify the process.

University Tobacco Policy

Please note that the University of Pennsylvania Health System has a new tobacco free policy in place to promote employee health. Tobacco users will not be hired and thus cannot be ranked at Penn.
