Realizing that for many people it takes months to find what they consider a good beautician or barber, we thought it might prove helpful to hear about those places that are frequented by other medical students.
Chaos Hair Salon
Everyone there will lay your hair out. Prices are reasonable, $35 for a wash and set. Relaxers are $50 for Design Essential, $60 for Affirm and $65 for Pure Essence. You get $10 off perms and 20% off cuts with the Student Advantage card. There is also a salon special of $10 off permanent colors every Thursday.

Cynthia’s specializes in corrective work. Relaxers start at $45. Wash and set are $35. The salon is open Monday to Friday 9-6 and Saturdays 9:30 - 3:00. Appointments preferred, but walk-ins are welcome.

Among its 125 shops and restaurants are 5 beauty salons. They are Command Performance, Andre Rossi, Talent Hair Beauty Salon, and the beauty salons located in JCPenny’s Department Store and Strawbridge and Clothiers Department Store. These are excellent spots to find bargains, because all of them offer “specials” or discounts throughout the year on relaxers, haircuts, tints, etc. Newspapers often run ads for these sales.

Tina’s can be a little pricey, but they will do an EXCELLENT job. The stylists are highly skilled professionals and can do just about any style you need. Shoulder length braids are approximately $150. Longer braids can be $200. Ask for a student discount. You may be able to negotiate a cheaper price.

Zulene specializes in natural beauty techniques. She is a wonderful stylist who has 22 years of experience. Hair care products and services include: aromatherapy, permanent herbal relaxers, scalp care, cutting, weaving, custom blending, and private skin and make-up line. Relaxers range from $65 to $85. Services include hair weaving, braiding, locks, relaxers, cuts, and color. Relaxers start at $55; cornrows start at $75. The salon is open until 6 PM on Tuesday and Wednesday, until 4 PM on Thursday and Friday and until 3 PM on Saturday.
