The field of Allergy and Immunology encompasses a broad spectrum
of disorders including the common IgE-mediated allergic diseases,
immunodeficiency, drug interactions and autoimmune disorders. Fellows
are exposed to the spectrum of disorders through personal patient
contact as well as lectures, conferences and other didactic teaching.
The broad interests of our faculty over the years provide the expertise
and patient referral base to permit such a training experience.
Another element of our training philosophy is that a thorough clinical
experience in A&I involves extensive outpatient experience.
In this manner, the trainee will develop specialized skills that
help insure a consultative role in the competitive managed care
environment. Therefore, special clinics devoted to aspects of the
A&I field have been organized. There is also exposure to training
from members of the Departments of Otorhinolaryngology and Dermatology.
Research training involves not only the essential hands-on experience
noted above, but also instruction in study design, data and statistical
analysis and guidance in preparing data for presentation and publication.
In summary, specific educational objectives are to:
- Provide outstanding clinical training in an inpatient and outpatient
setting.
- Provide outstanding didactic and supplemental seminar programs.
- Provide a highly structured research experience for physicians
in training, so that they may develop analytical and problem solving
skills that prepare them for academic careers and can be applied
to clinical practice.
