Dr. Shah’ interests are in translational research studies on the risk, pathogenesis, and outcome of organ failures (e.g., ARDS) in sepsis. Dr. Shah has developed a collaborative research infrastructure with the Emergency Department, Institute of Translational Medicine & Therapeutics, Penn Coagulation Laboratory, and the Center for Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics. Currently funded on an NIH Career Development Award (K23), Dr. Shah’s directs a prospective cohort study of patients admitted from the Penn ED with severe sepsis and follows them for development of ARDS, AKI, and death.
The Specific Aims of his study are:
Defining clinical risk factors for sepsis-related ARDS
Developing and validating a predictive index for ARDS
Identification of novel plasma biomarkers related to disordered
coagulation and impaired fibrinolysis (e.g., PAI-1, tissue
factor, Prot C, uPA, endocan, a-defensin) that may help
risk stratify patients and shed light on the mechanisms
of ARDS development in sepsis
Other interests of Dr. Shah include mechanical ventilation
in ARDS, role of recruitment maneuvers, and alternative
modes of ventilation (e.g., APRV).
