Dr. Lipson is an Assistant Professor of Medicine
in the Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Division and
serves as the Director of the Obstructive Lung Disease Program
and the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program at Penn. His clinical
interests include Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, adult
cystic fibrosis, and bronchiectasis. He serves as an attending
physician on the Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplantation
Service, as well as in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at
the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Lipson
is the Associate Director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care
Fellowship Training Program at Penn.
In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Lipson is heavily
involved in clinical research. He was awarded a NIH K23
grant to determine clinical risk factors for the development
of obliterative bronchiolitis (OB -- chronic lung rejection)
following lung transplantation. Additionally, he is studying
the use of hyperpolarized helium-3 MRI in the early detection
of OB. Dr. Lipson is also interested in novel, non-invasive
radiologic imaging techniques in order to study ventilation
and perfusion relationships in the lung.
Dr. Lipson completed his undergraduate work at the University
of Pennsylvania where he graduated cum laude and with Distinction
in the Major. He then obtained his MD degree at Jefferson
Medical College. At Jefferson, he was awarded the W.W. Smith
Scholarship for academic achievement and was elected to
the Hobart Amory Hare Medical Honor Society. Dr. Lipson
subsequently returned to Penn for his internship and residency
in Internal Medicine. Following his residency, Dr. Lipson
completed his Pulmonary and Critical Care training at Penn
where he received the 2000-2001 Will Rogers Institute Fellowship
Award. The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) currently
boards him in Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, and Critical
Care. He currently serves as physician-secretary of the
Pulmonary Disease Board of the ABIM.
