Dr. Hansen-Flaschen is Chief of the Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Division at the University of Pennsylvania. He oversees the teaching, research and patient care efforts of more than 40 full-time faculty members in pulmonary, allergy and critical care medicine at Penn. First as director of the pulmonary fellowship training program and then as chief of the division, Dr. Hansen-Flaschen has trained more than 90 pulmonary and critical care fellows, 70% of whom have subsequently pursued careers in academic medicine or industry.

Dr. Hansen-Flaschen heads the Penn Lung Center together with his surgical colleague, Dr. Joel Cooper. Under their joint leadership, participating physicians and advanced practice nurses in pulmonary medicine, thoracic surgery, chest radiology and lung pathology collaborate to provide definitive diagnosis and treatment of chest diseases. Penn Lung Center clinical and basic scientists are recognized internationally for leadership in research on lung diseases and medical critical care. US News and World Report consistently ranks the Penn Lung Center among the leading respiratory disease programs in the United States.

Dr. Hansen-Flaschen completed his bachelor's degree in chemistry with honors at Brown University and received his MD degree from New York University after election to AOA in his junior year. He served as a resident and chief resident in medicine and then as a fellow in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania before joining the faculty at Penn in 1982. Dr. Hansen-Flaschen was named Professor in Medicine in 1999. He served as Chair of the Medical Faculty Senate in 1997-1998 and as a founding leader of the Faculty 2000 initiative of the medical school faculty.

Dr. Hansen-Flaschen is a career medical educator. He the recipient of the Donna McCurdy, Robert Dunning Dripps, Donald B Martin and Robert L Mayock/Alfred P Fishman teaching awards of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1999, he received the Christian and Mary Lindback Award for Teaching Excellence, the highest teaching award at the Penn. He was the inaugural recipient of the Radhika Srinivasan Award for Humanism and Professionalism at Penn and the Clinical Educator Award of the American Thoracic Society. In 2008, Dr, Hansen-Flaschen will receive the Praxis Award in Professional Ethics from Villanova University.

Dr. Hansen-Flaschen’s scholarly interests focus shared medical decision making near the end of life and on humanizing the experience of patients and family members in intensive care units. Dr. Hansen-Flaschen has published more than 90 articles and textbook chapters and has edited three books. He lectures and teaches nationally and internationally on management of advanced lung diseases near the end of life and related topics.

Dr Hansen-Flaschen has served the American Thoracic Society as Chair of the Postgraduate Education Committee and Chair of the Clinical Problem Assembly's Long-range Planning Committee. He is currently chair of the International Lung Health Committee. Dr. Hansen-Flaschen is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians and the Philadelphia College of Physicians. Dr. Hansen-Flaschen is a past President of the Laennec Society of Philadelphia and was the founding President of the Drinker Society for Critical Care Medicine in Philadelphia. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of Respiratory Medicine, Clinical Pulmonary Medicine and the Journal of Critical Care.

Dr. Hansen-Flaschen is also an active pulmonary clinician who specializes in diagnostic evaluation and second opinions for patients with unusual or atypical respiratory disorders. He heads the Pulmonary Diagnosis and Second Opinion Program at Penn. Dr. Hansen-Flaschen is currently listed in "Philadelphia's Top Docs" by Philadelphia Magazine, “Delaware Valley Area Top Doctors” (Consumer’s Checkbook, "Best Doctors in America" (Best Doctors, Inc.), America's Top Doctors (Castle Connolly) and "Who's Who in the World."
