Research Program:

Pulmonary granulomatous disorders

Granulomatous Lung Inflammation:

Identification on a cellular and molecular level of the mechanisms responsible for granulomatous inflammation in the lung. Studies are currently underway to identify cytokine profile of lung cells involved in chronic beryllium diseas and, sarcoidosis. In addition, the class II molecules that present these antigens are being characterized molecularly. Understanding of the specific molecules involved in granulomatous inflammation should allow the development of new therapeutic strategies for these disorders. In addition, Dr. Rossman's laboratory has participated in 2 NIH sponsored collaborative studies of sarcoidosis. Studies are currently underway investigating gene-environment interactions in sarcoidosis and chronic beryllium disease. Dr. Rossman's laboratory is one of 5 laboratories in the country certified to perform beryllium stimulated lymphocyte proliferation assays.

Drug Trials in Interstitial Lung Disease. Dr. Rossman is a PI on three active placebo controlled trials in interstitial lung disease. These include remecade (infliximab) for chronic beryllium disesase, and pirfenidone and Traclear for UIP. In addition, Dr. Rossman is the PI for Univ. of PA site of the DOE’s beryllium bio-repository and DNA and plasma core.

Clinical Interest:

Dr. Rossman is the Director of the Pulmonary Bronchoscopy Laboratory and the Director of the Interstitial and Sarcoidosis Lung Disease Programs. He is an expert in tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, chronic beryllium disease and the idiopathic interstitial pneumonias including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
