Dr. Weinberger is Senior Vice President for Medical Education and Publishing at the American College of Physicians (ACP). Before assuming his current position at the ACP in March 2004, Dr. Weinberger served simultaneously as Executive Director of the Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, as Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and as Professor of Medicine and Faculty Associate Dean for Medical Education at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Weinberger is a graduate of Princeton University (summa cum laude) and Harvard Medical School. He received his housestaff training in Internal Medicine at the University of California – San Francisco Medical Center, followed by clinical and research fellowship training in Pulmonary Medicine at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. He was a member of the faculty of Beth Israel Hospital/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School from 1978-2004, and in addition to the most recent positions he held, at various times he also served as Chief of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Division, Associate Chairman of Medicine for Education, and Firm Chief on the Medical Service. He held numerous educational leadership roles at Harvard Medical School, and with his most recent responsibility as Executive Director of the Shapiro Institute, he was actively involved in educational innovation both locally and at a national level. He co-directed three national working conferences on medical education and educational reform, entitled Millennium Conferences I, II, and III, which were co-sponsored by the Shapiro Institute and the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Dr. Weinberger received multiple teaching awards at Harvard Medical School; nine of the recent classes at Harvard Medical School gave him the award for the outstanding Preclinical Teacher at Harvard Medical School, and he also received the S. Robert Stone Teaching Award. In 2001 he received the Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award from Alpha Omega Alpha and the Association of American Medical Colleges. He is the author of a popular textbook entitled Principles of Pulmonary Medicine, which is now in its 4th edition and has been translated into several foreign languages. He has written numerous original and review articles as well as multiple chapters for the leading textbooks of internal medicine, including Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine and Cecil’s Textbook of Medicine. He was the Editor of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine section of the American College of Physician’s MKSAP X, served as a member of the Editorial Board of The New England Journal of Medicine from 1992-2000, and was (since its inception and until taking his current position at ACP) the Editor-in-Chief of UpToDate in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, a popular computer-based clinical resource and educational program sponsored by the American Thoracic Society.

Dr. Weinberger’s area of special clinical interest is interstitial lung disease, especially sarcoidosis. He served as the Principal Investigator for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s participation in the National Institutes of Health-sponsored multicenter study entitled “A Case Control Etiologic Study of Sarcoidosis (ACCESS).”

In his current national leadership position in medical education, Dr. Weinberger directs the American College of Physicians’ Medical Education & Publishing Division. His responsibilities include the programmatic and administrative leadership of all educational activities, programs, and products of the American College of Physicians, the national organization for Internal Medicine and the largest specialty organization for physicians in the United States.
