Dr. Schweickert is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care.  Dr. Schweickert’s career is focused on the design and implementation of systems to improve the care of the critically ill patient with an emphasis on sedation practices, ventilator protocols, and early patient mobilization.

In the intensive care unit, Dr. Schweickert’s clinical and research efforts examine the role of sedation in the management of the patient with respiratory failure.  He studies the motivation for sedation administration during mechanical ventilation and the interplay of these drugs and critical illness on ventilator synchrony and weaning, ICU-acquired weakness, and patient delirium.  His current efforts focus on early mobilization of the patient undergoing mechanical ventilation.

Dr. Schweickert established and developed the Procedure and Resuscitation Service (PARS) at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 2007.  It combines two clinical entities, the Department of Medicine Procedure Service and the Medical Rapid Response Team.  As Director of the Medical Rapid Response Team, Dr. Schweickert has worked in the design and implementation of protocols to improve resuscitation and antibiotic administration.  His current efforts focus on bedside ultrasonography to aid the performance of both procedures and resuscitation.

Dr. Schweickert is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.  He completed both his bachelor's degree (Biology, magna cum laude) and medical degree (alpha omega alpha) at Wake Forest University.  After serving as a resident and chief resident in Internal Medicine and a fellow in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Chicago, Dr. Schweickert joined the faculty the University of Pennsylvania in 2007.

Dr. Schweickert is the recipient of the 2008 Donna McCurdy Teaching Award (Department of Medicine) and a 2009 HUP Patient Advocacy Award.
