The Division
of Medical Genetics and the Department of Medicine now offer
a 5-year combined residency in internal medicine and clinical
genetics. The combined program saves 1 year in achieving Board-eligibility
in both primary specialties. This residency is accredited
by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American
Board of Medical Genetics. The program director is Reed E.
Pyeritz, M.D., Ph.D.
The curriculum
for the medical genetics residency involves training primarily
in disorders that affect adults, so there is emphasis on cancer
genetics, neurogenetics, adult connective tissue disorders, and
adult dysmorphology. Additionally, residents have required rotations
in pediatric clinical genetics, metabolic genetics, reproductive/prenatal
genetics, and clinical laboratory genetics (cytogenetics, biochemical
genetics and molecular diagnostics). The medical genetics faculty
available to mentor the required research experience number over
30. (Click here for a detailed
rotation outline by year of training)
Interested
senior medical students must apply to both the internal medicine
residency of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
and the medical genetic residency of the University of Pennsylvania.
An interview for both programs can be scheduled on sequential
days. For the medical genetics program contact Regina Harvey
at harveyr@email.chop.edu.
Please contact
Reed Pyeritz if you would like to discuss this opportunity.
