REMOTE ACCESS OPTIONS FOR UPHS
Webmail -  The Outlook Exchange 2003 webmail site enables you to access your UPHS Exchange e-mail account using the Internet Explorer web browser, via any Internet Service Provider. Plus this new service has the look and feel of the Outlook 2003 client software!  Webmail is an easy way to access your e-mail and there is no charge for this service.    This service is the preferred remote access e-mail option.  Best of all, you can use your own ISP, and you do not need a UPHS VPN account just to check your e-mail! Check out the Exchange 2003 Webmail site!

Neoteris "Instant Virtual Extranet" website - MedView, EPICweb and many other web based application users (and other short-term or "one-off" needs such as filling out an online form, taking an online exam, etc) can use the UPHS "Neoteris" web-based "Instant Virtual Internet" site.  This is a convenient option for situations where you cannot or do not need the full VPN thick client installed on your computer. Instructions for the "Instant Virtual Extranet" site!
UPHS (Nortel) VPN client -  After applying for your UPHS Remote Access account and receiving your confirmation message, you can download the UPHS (Nortel) VPN client. You can install this software on your computer to create a tunneled network connection into the internal UPHS network.  Software Download page
Internet Service Providers
UPHS users will need to subscribe to their own ISP solution in order to connect to the Internet.  Once connected to the Internet, they will be able to use a VPN tunnel to enter the UPHS internal network.
Before subscribing to an ISP (dial-up, Cable Modem or DSL), please check with the service provider to see if they have any constraints about VPN usage over their networks.  Most modern Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that use Network Address Translation (NAT2) should be capable of allowing the UPHS (Nortel) VPN client to access our internal network.  VPN connection via AOL has been problematic and should be avoided.
DCAnet - This internet service provider (ISP) is the recommended replacement for the former PennNet remote access, which was discontinued on August 1, 2000. The service is available to UPHS employees at a discounted monthly rate. There are local numbers for the tri-state area, and an 800 number is available for an additional cost. As the customer, you are responsible for the cost of this service. To be able to apply, you will need a valid UPHS email address (user@uphs.upenn.edu, user@mail.med.upenn.edu, or user@pahosp.com).
Fiberlink Global Remote - On Wed 17-May-2006, the UPHS Telecomm group announced to all Fiberlink dial up users that the Fiberlink dial-up ISP program is being discontinued.  Any UPHS users still using the Fiberlink dial-up ISP will need to make other arrangements to connect to the Internet prior to the 30-June-2006 cutoff date.
