Neurocritical Care Fellowship

The Penn Neurocritical Care Program offers a 2-year fellowship based on the curriculum defined by the Neurocritical Care Society. Training will occur in the 22-bed NeuroICU at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania under the supervision of faculty neurointensivists.  Fellows will also rotate through the general surgical and medical ICUs and the acute stroke service.  Electives are available in Neurosurgery, Anesthesia, Interventional Neurology, Neuroelectrophysiology, Neurosonology, Intraoperative Monitoring, Simulation Medicine, and Pediatric Intensive Care.

Fellows will be trained in the diagnosis and management of patients with severe brain and spine trauma, subarachnoid hemorrhage, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, neuromuscular and epilepsy emergencies, brain tumors, and central nervous system infections. Major teaching topics include the pathophysiology and treatment of severe brain injury, advanced neuromonitoring techniques, and fundamentals of medical and surgical critical care.  The training equips fellows with core critical care skills including airway and ventilator management, cardiopulmonary support, and invasive bedside procedures.  Fellows will participate in weekly didactic conferences on key topics in neurocritical care, general critical care, and stroke.

Fellows will be expected to develop an independent clinical or basic science research project with a faculty mentor and will participate in established clinical trials.

Upon completion of their training, fellows will be board-eligible in Neurocritical Care.
