Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania Health System is to provide clinical care and conduct research combined with educating the physicians and scientists of the future in disorders that affect the nervous system.

Specifically, clinical care in the Department covers the entire spectrum of disorders that impair the central and peripheral nervous system. We embrace new technologies and seek the highest quality, cost-effective care by integrating research with clinical practice.

Our research, both basic and clinical, competes successfully for external funding and is interested in translation from the bench to the bedside.

We combine our research and clinical care in training the academic neurosurgeons of the future and in providing an environment where medical students, graduate students, physicians and other health care providers are integrated and exposed to our field.
