Clinical Neurosurgery
A minimum of 36 months are spent in rotations among the participating hospitals. These rotations are structured at both the junior and senior levels with a final year as chief resident.

Each rotation is for a 6-month period. The program is organized to ensure a graded and increasing level of responsibility as the resident progresses through the rotations.

Neurology
A period of three months is spent in clinical neurology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania or Pennsylvania Hospital. A choice of neurology subspecialties includes neuromuscular, intraoperative electrophysiology and neuro-ophthalmology.

Research Fellowship
A minimum of 18 months are spent in a laboratory of clinical research designed to prepare the resident for a career in academic neurosurgery. This rotation is carried out under the direction of one of the Penn faculty members.

Opportunities exist for participation in a wide array of programs in the entire University of Pennsylvania community. Residents will receive training and experience in grant application and research publication.

Clinical responsibilities are minimized during this rotation so that the resident may focus his/her efforts on research.

Elective
The remaining rotations within the 6 year program are structured to meet the needs and interests of the individual resident. This may include a rotation on interventional and/or diagnostic neuroradiology; neuropathology; or an additional clinical rotation with emphasis on an area of the resident's own interest such as epilepsy, skull base surgery, spine, pediatric neurosurgery, or craniofacial reconstruction.
