Cerebral IschemiaCerebrovascular research is conducted in the laboratories of Dr. Frank Welsh. The research is focused on molecular mechanisms of brain injury and survival for the purpose of discovering new therapies for cerebral ischemia. The laboratory is equipped to produce both global and focal cerebral ischemia in rodent models. A variety of physiologic, pathologic, cellular and molecular biologic techniques are currently in use. The research is carried out under the direction of Drs. Welsh and Katalin Kariko, with the assistance of postdoctoral fellows and neuroscience graduate students.Neurosurgery residents have also contributed greatly to the productivity of the laboratory during their research training. The labs are located in the heart of the medical school (Stemmler Hall), only minutes away from the clinical offices of the department.
