Penn Medicine Physician Awarded 2012 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Recipient by American Association for Women Radiologists

PHILADELPHIA — Parvati Ramchandani, MD, section chief, Genitourinary (GU) Radiology, Professor of Radiology and Surgery, was selected by the American Association for Women Radiologists (AAWR) as the 2012 recipient of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award for outstanding contributions to the field of radiology. Ramchandani was chosen for her service in numerous leadership and mentorship roles in the specialty.

Ramchandani’s understanding of the challenges faced by women in radiology strengthened during her residency, while serving at another academic medical center as the only woman resident in a department with only one female faculty member.

Other awards to honor teaching accomplishments include Ramchandani’s unanimous selection by The Philadelphia Roentgen Ray Society as the 2012-2013 recipient of the Outstanding Educator Award. She is also a recipient of the Wallace T. Miller award for excellence in Radiology Resident Teaching, a two-time recipient of the Paul Leberman Teaching Award for Excellence in Urology Resident Teaching, and the Robert Dunning Dripps Award from the University of Pennsylvania Health System for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education.

In current clinical practice, Ramchandani links diagnostic and interventional GU radiology with urology and nephrology. Academically, this insight translates into 115 original articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, 40 chapters in valuable texts, and co-authoring or editing two textbooks. Ramchandani became the first radiologist to become a lead author of a surgical textbook through her work on “Campbell’s Urology,” a board review text for urology residents.

Ramchandani’s numerous professional accomplishments include being a member of the GU Expert Review Panel for the American College of Radiology’s (ACR) Continuous Professional Improvement Program since 1997, examiner for the American Board of Radiology since 1998, Chair for the Urinary Tract Committee of the American Board of Radiology Core Examination in Diagnostic Radiology, member, vice chair, and chair designate for the GU section of the ACR Appropriateness Task Force since 2004, chairman of the refresher course committee for the GU track at the annual Radiological Society of North America meeting for two terms, and secretary treasurer, vice president, and most recently president of The Society of Uroradiology from 2010 to 2011.

Established in 1981, the AAWR offers a forum for issues important to women in radiology, radiation oncology, and similar professions, and sponsors programs to advance opportunities for women and supports networking among its 1,100 members and other professionals.

Ramchandani will formally receive the honor at the AAWR Annual Business Luncheon later this month.
