Marna S. Barrett, PhD, Appointed
Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of
Pennsylvania School of Medicine
(Philadelphia,
PA) - Marna S. Barrett, PhD, has been appointed
an Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Department
of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School
of Medicine.
Dr. Barrett earned a BS in Clinical Chemistry and a
BA in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences from the University
of South Florida, Tampa. In 1981, she received an MS
degree in Human Genetics from Sarah Lawrence College
in New York. In 1993, she obtained a PhD in Clinical
Psychology from the University of Memphis (formerly
Memphis State University).
Dr. Barrett's current research interests are based on
the five-year National Institute of Mental Health-funded
investigation of depression, for which she is the project
director. She is also interested in general factors
influencing the process and outcome of psychotherapy.
Dr. Barrett is working to develop a predictive model
for engagement and retention in treatment in community
mental health centers, college counseling centers, and
family clinics.
She is a member of numerous organizations including
the American Psychological Association, the Society
for Psychotherapy Research and the National Society
of Genetic Counselors. She is also a Certified Genetic
Counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling
and a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics.
Dr. Barrett has authored or co-authored research papers
in publications including the Journal of Consulting
and Clinical Psychology; presented papers at
meetings such as the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Society
of Psychotherapy Research; and has been invited to lecture
on many occasions, most recently in the clinical psychology
doctoral program, 'Theories of Personality', at the
University of Pennsylvania.
