Eric D. Schwartz, MD, Named Assistant Professor of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine

Philadelphia, PA) - Eric D. Schwartz, MD, has been named Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Dr. Schwartz earned a BA in History from Dartmouth College and his MD from Johns Hopkins University. He completed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and his fellowship in Neuroradiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. From 1998-1999, Dr. Schwartz was a Voluntary Instructor of Radiology at the University of Miami and, an Instructor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine from 1999-2002.

His research focuses on the development of a non-invasive MRI technique for imaging axon regeneration and neuroprotection in the spinal cord following injury. He is also working to develop and evaluate transplants designed to help cure spinal cord injury. To pursue this research, he has received sponsorship from the National Institutes of Health and the American Society of Neuroradiology/Berlex.

Dr. Schwartz is certified by the American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Radiology and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Neuroradiology. He is a senior member of the American Society of Neuroradiology and a member of the Society of Neuroscience, Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the Society for Molecular Imaging, International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and the American College of Radiology. He also holds editorial positions with the American Journal of Neuroradiology and Radiographics. Among his many accolades, Dr. Schwartz has been elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and has received an honorable mention from the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Student Essay Contest, a Certificate of Merit from RSNA, and an RSNA Research and Education Foundation Roentgen Resident Research Award.

He was recently invited to lecture at a Johns Hopkins Neuroradiology Review Course on the subject, "Anatomy and Degenerative Disease of the Spine" and "Spine Infections and Inflammation." Dr. Schwartz has been published in peer-reviewed publications including the Journal of Thoracic Imaging, American Journal of Roentgenology, American Journal of Neuroradiology, RSNA Electronic Journal, Foot and Ankle and Surgical Neurology.
