Jerome Strauss III, MD, PhD, of Penn's
School of Medicine, Installed as President of the Society
for Gynecologic Investigation
(Philadelphia,
PA) - Jerome F. Strauss III, MD, PhD, founding
Director of the Center for Research on Reproduction
and Women's Health at the University of Pennsylvania
Medical Center, will be installed today as President
of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation (SGI).
Strauss, the Luigi Mastroianni Jr. Professor
of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is also Associate Chair
of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
"My agenda for the next year as president
of SGI will be to ensure the vitality of this prominent,
learned society at a time of great opportunity, but
also a time when federal and foundation funding for
research may be in jeopardy. I will also work to expand
the participation of the international community in
the society," he said. "This is in keeping with my interest
in international health and new national initiatives
to invest in research on global health issues."
The SGI is a nonprofit, international
scientific organization working to promote excellence
in the fields of obstetrics, gynecology, reproductive
medicine, and gynecologic oncology. It has approximately
1,000 members, all of whom are elected in recognition
of their significant contributions in research related
to women's health. Strauss was elected president of
SGI for the 2003 term two years ago, and last year served
as president-elect. He is slated to be installed president
today during the society's annual meeting at the Marriott
Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C.
Throughout his career, Strauss has been
the recipient of numerous awards, honors and appointments.
He also has served as an elected officer or member of
various national and international organizations, including
the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of
Sciences, and he currently serves as a member of the
National Advisory Child Health and Human Development
Council of the National Institutes of Health. He is
the recipient of the Research Award from the Society
for the Study of Reproduction; the Transatlantic Medal
of the British Endocrine Society; and the President's
Achievement Award from the Society of Gynecologic Investigation.
