Calcium May be the Key to Understanding Alzheimer's Disease

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have shown that mutations in two proteins associated with familial Alzheimer's disease disrupt the flow of calcium ions within neurons. The two proteins, called PS1 and PS2 (presenilin 1 and 2), interact with a calcium release channel in an intracellular cell compartment.

Analysis of Quickly Stopped Rx Orders Provides New Tool for Reducing Medical Errors

By studying medication orders that are withdrawn (“discontinued”) by physicians within 45 minutes of their origination, researchers at The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have demonstrated a systematic and efficient method of identifying prescribing errors. The method, they say, has value to screen for medication errors and as a teaching tool for physicians and physicians-in-training. The report is published in the July/August 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. |
Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Ranked in Top 10 of “Honor Roll” in U.S.News & World Report Best Hospitals Survey

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) has been selected for the “Honor Roll” of best hospitals in America by U.S.News & World Report, as featured in its July 23rd issue. The publication’s prestigious annual ranking of hospitals places HUP in the top 10 of the approximately 5,400 facilities surveyed. HUP was one of only 19 hospitals honored with the “Honor Roll” recognition for excellence in multiple specialties.
