The Division of Gynecologic Oncology is an integral part of the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania and serves as a major referral center for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with premalignant or invasive cancers of the female genital tract. To provide patients with the best possible outcome, the gynecologic oncologists work closely with radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists.

All of the gynecologic oncologists participating in the Program are board certified or eligible in gynecologic oncology. They perform all aspects of gynecologic cancer surgery and complex benign gynecologic surgery, including radical and exenterative pelvic procedures as well as intestinal and urologic surgery when related to the patient's malignancy.

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology has a national and international reputation for its work in clinical research and for its basic science research laboratory which studies the immunologic aspects of gynecologic cancers, particularly ovarian cancer. The Gynecologic Oncology Research Laboratory is currently focusing on investigating the immune response to ovarian cancer and the development of novel immunotherapeutic techniques.

As part of its strong commitment to medical education, the Division of Gynecology Oncology sponsors the only gynecologic oncology fellowship available in the Philadelphia region. Penn is one of the original training programs established and approved by the American Board and represents one of only forty such training programs nationwide. U.S.News & World Report's list of America's best graduate schools named the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine among the top medical schools in the country for women's health, and for its gynecology program.

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology has taken a leadership role in providing cancer information on the internet via OncoLink, the Abramson Cancer Center's online information resource for patients, families of cancer patients and health care professionals.

The participating physicians in the Gynecologic Oncology Program make special effort to maintain regular contact and coordinate care with the patient's referring physician throughout the course of treatment and post-treatment follow-up.
