The residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Penn has a total of 24 physicians, 6 in each year of a 4 year program.  We are very proud of our diverse group of committed resident physicians.

The residents spend the majority of their time based at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Our program is located in West Philadelphia, so in addition to serving as a regional and national referral center we also provide care to a diverse group of women from the local community through our Helen O. Dickens Center for Women

The clinical programs continue to grow; last year we performed over 3,600 deliveries, over 1,500 surgical procedures and approximately 127,000 outpatient visits.  The department has 50 full-time faculty, 3 midwives and a number of certified clinical nurse practitioners who work with the residents.

We offer residents a broad range of clinical opportunities for training in all aspects of general obstetrics and gynecology and the following subspecialties:

The curriculum also includes several off-service experiences in emergency medicine, internal medicine and surgical intensive care. Residents are provided with a month of elective time to pursue a clinical or research interest.

In addition to clinical training, our program provides residents with clinical research training through our Resident Research program. This is a four-year curriculum to teach research principles and to assist residents in pursuing their own research project.

There are daily morning conferences including protected resident instruction time on Thursday mornings. Our residency program is designed to prepare residents for general practice or for subspecialty fellowship training. Traditionally, about half our graduates have pursued careers in academic medicine and the curriculum is designed to provide the skills necessary for a successful academic career.
