The Center for Research on Reproduction and Women's Health (CRRWH) Annual Retreat and 35th Annual James M. Cuozzo Memorial Lecture

Resident Research Day

The 11th Annual Resident Research Day will take place on May 30, 2014. Dr. Steven G. Gabbe will deliver the John Rock Lecture entitled: "Burnout in Obstetric and Gynecology: Increasing Stress in this New Era of Health."  Dr. Gabbe is Senior Vice President for Health Sciences and Chief Executive Officer at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.


Penn Medicine Welcomes Mark A. Morgan, MD, Sarah H. Kim, MD, MSCE, Emily M. Ko, MD, MSCR, Robert A. Burger, MD, and Fiona Simpkins, MD

We are pleased to welcome Mark A. Morgan, MD , Sarah H. Kim, MD, MSCE, Robert A. Burger, MD and Fiona Simpkins, MD to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology Program at Penn Medicine. 

Dr. Morgan is the John J. Mikuta, MD Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and serves as Chief of Gynecologic Oncology.  His area of focus is surgical management of gynecologic malignancies, including ovarian, uterine, vulvar and cervical cancers.  He also specializes in fertility-sparing surgery for early cervical cancer, and complex gynecologic surgery including urinary and rectal fistula repair. Dr. Morgan performs laparoscopic and robotic surgery and also serves as Director of The Center for Advanced Gynecologic Surgery.

Dr. Sarah H. Kim is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology.  She specializes in the surgical treatment of gynecologic cancers and complex benign gynecologic conditions.  Dr. Kim performs minimally invasive surgery including robotic surgery.

Dr. Emily M. Ko is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  She specializes in the surgical treatment of gynecologic cancers and complex benign gynecologic condition and performs minimally invasive surgery including robotic surgery.

Dr. Robert A. Burger joins the department as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Deputy Director for Clinical Research of the Ovarian Cancer Research Center and Fellowship Program Director. 

Dr. Burger is nationally recognized in the field of gynecologic oncology for his work on novel therapeutics for ovarian and peritoneal cancers.  He is an expert on the use of antiangiogenic agents such as bevacizumab (Avastin) and lead the phase I and III trials published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the New England Journal of Medicine.  He is an active member of the GOG and currently serves as co-chair of the developmental Therapeutics Committee.

Dr. Fiona Simpkins is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  She specializes in the evaluation and management of women with gynecologic malignancies, including ovarian, uterine, vulvar and cervical cancers. Dr. Simpkins primary research goals are to develop novel strategies and new molecular targets for the treatment of gynecologic malignancies and understand the role of cancer stem cells in ovarian cancer.

 


Penn Medicine Welcomes Puneet Masson, MD

We are pleased to welcome Puneet Masson, MD to the Division of Urology and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Dr. Masson will serve as the Director of the Male Fertility Program for Penn Fertility Care.  Dr. Masson specializes in male-factor infertility, andrology, male sexual dysfunction, and general urology. He provides specialized care for men with fertility problems and performs microsurgical procedures for the treatment of male infertility and vasectomy reversals.


Annual American Gynecologic Club Meeting

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Penn hosted the Annual American Gynecologic Club Meeting on October  24-26, 2013.  The meeting was well-attended and highlights included scientific sessions, black tie dinner at the Penn Museum's Egyptian Gallery and a lecture and tour of the Barnes Foundation.

 


Awards & Honors

Coleen Wall, LPN received the 2013 John J. Mikuta Award for Professionalism in Women's Health.  This award recognizes an individual in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology who exemplifies a commitment to the highest standards of excellence in the practice of medicine, embraces the core values of integrity and respect for others, and is committed to the welfare of their patients and the health care needs of women.

Dr. Christopher Nold received the 2013 Fellow Teaching Award for Excellence in Resident Education.

Dr. Amanda Rohn received the 2013 Resident Research Award for Excellence in Research.

Dr. Amy Turitz received the 2013 Resident Teaching Award for Excellence in Resident Education.

Dr. Danielle Burkland received the 2013 Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education in obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Amy Turitz received the 2013 Resident Teaching Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education.

Dr. Alyssa Covelli received the 2013 Midwife's Intern Award.

Dr. Amanda Rohn received the 2013 Golden Mitt Award.

Dr. Amanda Rohn is the 2013 recipient of The Robert R. Rascoe, MD Award for Excellence in Ambulatory Patient Care.  This award recognizes a chief resident who has demonstrated compassionate care and concern for our patients.  The recipient was selected by the attendings and nursing staff in the Helen O. Dickens Center for Women's Health.

Dr. Amy Turitz received the OB Society S. Leon Israel Prize.

Drs. Amy Turitz and Stephanie Sober were selected to receive a Penn Pearl Award for exceptional teaching in clinical medicine.  This is one of the most coveted teaching awards at Penn Medicine; the students nominate and select the awardees as an expression of their gratitude for the invaluable contributions these two individuals have made to their education.
