Dr. Ronny Drapkin Recipient of Tina's Wish Global Women's Health Award

Ronny Drapkin, MD, PhD, Director of Gynecological Research at the Basser Center for BRCA and Director of the Penn Ovarian Cancer Research Center, recently attended an event in New York City honoring President Bill Clinton with the inaugural Tina's Wish Global Women's Health Award. Tina’s Wish is a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding research for the early detection and prevention of ovarian cancer. Penn is one of only five sites funded by the foundation and Dr. Drapkin is the foundation awardee at Penn.  His laboratory works on methods to identify novel biomarkers for the early detection of ovarian cancer.  During the event to honor President Clinton, the scientists from the five funded sites got to meet with the President and discuss the importance of research efforts and adequate funding.

The Center for Research on Reproduction and Women's Health (CRRWH) Annual Retreat and 36th Annual James M. Cuozzo Memorial Lecture

12th Annual Resident Research Day

The 12th Annual Resident Research Day will take place on May 29, 2015. Dr. Dee Fenner will deliver the John Rock Lecture entitled: "Predicting and Preventing Post-partum Pelvic Floor Disorders." Dr. Fenner is Furlong Professor of Women's Health and the Director of the Division of Gynecology.  She is also the Associate Chair for Surgical Services in the Department of OBGYN at the University of Michigan.

Penn Medicine Welcomes Ronny Drapkin, MD, PhD

We are pleased to welcome Ronny Drapkin, MD, PhD to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology Program at Penn Medicine. 

Dr. Drapkin recently joined the department as the Director of the Ovarian Cancer Research Center.  He also holds a joint appointment on the leadership team of the Abramson Cancer Center Basser Center for BRCA as Director of Gynecological Research..

Dr. Drapkin is nationally recognized in the field of ovarian cancer research.  Research in his lab is aimed at understanding the pathogenesis of genetic alterations involved in women's cancers, with a specific interest in ovarian cancer.   The major goal of his research is to translate important biological principles discovered in the laboratory into clinical useful diagnostic and therapeutic tools. 

Awards & Honors

Dr. Anuja Dokras is President-Elect of the Androgen Excess and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Society. 

Dr. Mark A. Morgan was elected to the inaugural class of Academy of Master Clinicians.  This newly established program recognizes Penn Medicine clinicians who exemplify the highest standards of clinical excellence, humanism and professionalism.

Dr. Deborah A. Driscoll was elected President of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology effective June 2014.  The ABOG is an independent, non-profit organization that certifies obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States.  Founded in 1927, the ABOG is one of 24 specialty Boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Dr. Kurt Barnhart was elected 2013-2014 President of the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.   Dr. Barnhart was also elected to serve athree-year term as Chair of the Section Advisory Council of the Pennsylvania Section of The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Dr. Daniel J. Powell, Jr. was selected by the Board of Directors from the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy from an exceptional pool of “high achievers” for a 2014 Outstanding New Investigator Award based upon various significant contributions to the field of gene and cell therapy.

Dr. Alyssa Colwill received the inaugural Sharon Youcha Compassionate Patient Care Award for excellent patient care with compassion, empathy and respect, and listens and treats the patient as a whole person.

Dr. Danielle Burkland received the 2014 John J. Mikuta Award for Professionalism in Women's Health.  This award recognizes an individual in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology who exemplifies a commitment to the highest standards of excellence in the practice of medicine, embraces the core values of integrity and respect for others, and is committed to the welfare of their patients and the health care needs of women.

Dr. Justin Brandt received the 2014 Fellow Teaching Award for Excellence in Resident Education.

Dr. Nyia Noel received the 2014 Resident Research Award for Excellence in Research.

Dr. Laura Cooney received the 2014 Resident Teaching Award for Excellence in Resident Education.

Dr. Sindhu Srinivas received the 2014 Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education in obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Charles Hummel received the 2014 Midwife's Intern Award.

Dr. Mary Ackenbom received the 2014 Golden Mitt Award.

Dr. Mary Ackenbom is the 2014 recipient of The Robert R. Rascoe, MD Award for Excellence in Ambulatory Patient Care.  This award recognizes a chief resident who has demonstrated compassionate care and concern for our patients.  The recipient was selected by the attendings and nursing staff in the Helen O. Dickens Center for Women's Health.

Drs. Catherine Salva and Mary Ackenbom were both selected by the medical students to receive the 2014 Penn Pearls Award for outstanding teaching.

Dr. Ronald I. Drapkin joined the department as Director of Penn Medicine's Ovarian Cancer Research Center in February 2015.

2014 Annual End of Year Dinner
