The Center for Research on Reproduction and Women's Health (CRRWH) Annual Retreat and Annual James M. Cuozzo Memorial Lecture

Tenth Annual Resident Research Day

The Tenth Annual Research Day will take place on May 17, 2013.  Dr. Jeffrey F. Peipert will deliver the John Rock Lecture entitled "The Importance of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception." Dr. Peipert is the Vice Chair of Clinical Research and the Robert J. Terry Professor in the Department of OBGYN at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine.

 


Two-Step Immunotherapy Attacks Advanced Ovarian Cancer, Penn Medicine Researchers Report

Most ovarian cancer patients are diagnosed with late stage disease that is unresponsive to existing therapies. In a new study, researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine show that a two-step personalized immunotherapy treatment — a dendritic cell vaccine using patients’ own tumor followed by adoptive T cell therapy — triggers anti-tumor immune responses in these type of patients. Ira and Ester Rosenwaks New Investigator Award

Clarisa R. Gracia, MD, MSCE was the 2012 recipient of the Ira and Ester Rosenwaks New Investigator Award.  This award recognizes a member of ASRM who has made outstanding contributions to clinical or basic research in reproductive sciences, published within 10 years after completing research, or clinical training, and initiating an independent career as an investigator.


2012 Women's Reproductive Health Research Symposium

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Penn hosted the annual Women's Reproductive Health Research (WRHR) Symposium held on October 11-12, 2012.  The meeting was well-attended with over 85 scholars, principal investigators, program directors and mentors. The keynote presentation was given by Dr. Alan E. Guttmacher, Director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD). The WRHR program is funded by the NICHD and supports the career development of obstetrician-gynecologists in academic medicine by providing an opportunity to receive outstanding research training with a senior investigator-mentor.

 


Biomarker Discovery May Lead to Reliable Test for Ectopic Pregnancy

Several science news websites, including e! Science News, Science Codex, and Science Blog, reported that scientists from the Wistar Institute and the Perelman School of Medicine have discovered protein markers that could provide physicians with the first reliable blood test to predict ectopic pregnancies. Their findings have been published in the February 16th issue of the Journal of Proteome Research. Kurt Barnhart, MD, MSCE, Associate Chief for Research for Penn Fertility Care and Director of Women's Health Clinical Research Center, worked in collaboration with The Wistar team and is continuing to test the reliability of this biomarker blood test to diagnose ectopic pregnancies, which are the leading cause of death in the first trimester of pregnancy. e! Penn Fertility Care at Radnor

Drs. Suleena Kalra and Monica Mainigi have joined Drs. Samantha Pfeifer and Clarisa Gracia at Penn Fertility Care at Radnor. Drs. Kalra and Mainigi are fertility specialists and also provide adolescent reproductive heath care.


Awards & Honors

The Society for Gynecologic Investigation presented Dr. Lisa Levine with the 2013 Award for Best New Investigator Poster Presentation.

Drs. Amy Turitz and Stephanie Sober were selected to receive a Penn Pearl Award for exceptional teaching in clinical medicine.  This is one of the most coveted teaching awards at Penn Medicine; the students nominate and select the awardees as an expression of their gratitude for the invaluable contributions these two individuals have made to their education.

The Foundation for Women's Cancer Research Grants and Awards Committee recently selected Dr. Caitlin Stashwick to receive the Johanna's Fund Ovarian Cancer Research Grant in support of her research application entitled: "Overcoming B7-H4 Mediated T-cell Inhibition and Tumor Immune Evasion in Ovarian Cancer with Novel Chimeric Protein."

Congratulations to Lisa Mill, and the GYN Oncology and 1,000 Courtyard staff

Lisa Mills was one of the recipients chosen to receive the Manager of the Year Award as part of the CPUP Service Excellence Rewards and Recognition Program 2012.

The staff in Gynecologic Oncology and 1,000 Courtyard were both recipients of the CPUP Team of the Quarter Service Excellence Award.  This award recognizes groups of employees who demonstrate significant contributions to CPUP practices.

Dr. Laura H. Cooney received the 2012 John J. Mikuta Award for Professionalism in Women's Health. This award recognizes an individual in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology who, like Dr. Mikuta, exemplifies a commitment to the highest standards of excellence in the practice of medicine, embraces the core values of integrity and respect for others, and is committed to the welfare of their patients and the health care needs of women.

Dr. Joy Greer received the 2012 Fellow Teaching Award for Excellence in Resident Education.

Dr. Sara Pentlicky received the 2012 Emily B. Mudd Award which is named after the distinguished Professor Emeritus of Family Studies in Psychiatry.  This award is for substantial contributions to the field of family health.

Dr. Samantha Weed received the 2012 Resident Research Award for Excellence in Research.

Dr. Elizabeth Melendez received the 2012 Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education in obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Laura Cooney received the 2012 Resident Teaching Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education.

Dr. Lori Cory received the 2012 Midwife's Intern Award.

Dr. Peter Vasquez received the 2012 Golden Mitt Award.

Dr. Priya Patel was the 2012 recipient of The Robert R. Rascoe, MD Award for Excellence in Ambulatory Patient Care.  This award recognizes a chief resident who has demonstrated compassionate care and concern for our patients.  The recipient was selected by the attendings and nursing staff in the Helen O. Dickens Center for Women's Health.

Kara Pravdo, RN was selected to receive the 2012 Rosalyn J. Watts Award for Nurse-Patient/Family Relationship. This award acknowledges nurses who consistently establish therapeutic relationships with patients and their families, characterized by individualized care.  Recipients of this award incorporates religious, spiritual, ethnic and cultural beliefs into the delivery of care.


New Faculty

Dr. Corrina Oxford joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Pennsylvania Hospital as the Director of Obstetrical Services in November 2012.

Dr. Alhambra Frarey joined the Penn Ob/Gyn Associates in August 2012.

Dr. Pamela Neff joined the gynecology practice at Pennsylvania Hospital and Haddonfield, NJ in August 2012

Dr. Dana Shanis joined the Penn Ob/Gyn Associates in August.

Dr. Peter J. Vasquez joined Penn Ob/Gyn Associates in July 2012.

Dr. Sara Pentlicky joined the Penn Family Planning and Pregnancy Loss Center in July 2012 and will also practice gynecology at Penn Ob/Gyn Associates at 3701 Market Street.

Dr. Jamie Bastek joined the Maternal Fetal Medicine Division in July 2012. Dr. Bastek is also a Women's Reproductive Health Research Scholar.

Dr. Matthew VerMilyea joined the Penn Fertility Care as the Director of Embryology and Andrology Laboratories in May 2012.
