The Scheie Eye Institute (SEI) is the home of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Perelman School of Medicine. The Institute is located on the campus of the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center of Philadelphia, a part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System since June of 1995.

In addition to SEI, residents rotate to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), and the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Medical Center (VA). All these facilities are located within 5 to 6 blocks of the Scheie Eye Institute.

Sulewski Katowitz | EducationClinical services offered at SEI and at the other facilities run the gamut from general ophthalmic care to the most sophisticated quaternary care procedures. Our goal is to train outstanding residents who will leave with a broad experience in clinical ophthalmology. Ample opportunity is provided for participation in academic pursuits and most residents pursue sub-specialty fellowships and academic careers.

Our program provides a wide spectrum of clinical activity with extensive experience in hands-on patient care and approximately 100-120 intraocular procedures, as well as strabismus surgery, eyelid and orbital surgery, laser surgery, and retina-vitreous surgery by the end of the residency. In addition, a full schedule of lectures and conferences provides for an excellent didactic program to complement the clinical experience.

Each year we accept five (5) first-year residents. The residency extends from July 1 through June 30 and is a 36-month program. Reappointment is made annually based on satisfactory performance.
