The situations surrounding the diagnosis of any tumor are always fraught with great deal of stress. The focus of our service is to move as quickly as possible to provide our patients with an accurate diagnosis followed by immediate access to a multidisciplinary care plan. Our goal is preserve the maximum function possible for patients by utilizing the latest techniques in surgical and reconstructive care.
The multiple needs of patients with musculoskeletal tumors or sarcomas require the dedication and expertise of a team of health care professionals. The team consists of the orthopaedic oncology surgeons, Richard D. Lackman, MD, Christian M. Ogilvie, MD and Edward J. Fox, MD as well as pathologists specializing in the diagnosis of such tumors, radiologists expert in the evaluation of x-rays, scans and other imaging studies, radiation oncologists who provide needed radiation therapy, medical oncologists to manage the delivery of chemotherapy treatments and a team of nurses and nurse practioners who ensure the ongoing coordination of care for patients as well as support for the patients and their families. Our team is further supported by the active and ongoing efforts of research, which occurs in the laboratory and clinic.
The Orthopaedic Oncology Service currently at the University of Pennsylvania, begun by Dr. Richard D. Lackman in 1983, was the first service of its kind in the Delaware Valley. From its inception, the focus has always been to provide the finest in state of the art treatment for adults and children with primary bone and soft tissue tumors as well as for patients with metastatic disease. The service has grown in both size and scope and is the largest orthopaedic oncology service in the Delaware Valley and also one of the largest in the nation. Currently, seeing more that one thousand new patients annually, we strive to provide all patients with the finest and most advanced care available.
