The Division of Orthopaedic Trauma provides full-service trauma care for the Philadelphia region and beyond. The Division is situated within the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, a Level I Trauma Center. As the hospital is both an academically oriented university teaching hospital and a medical care center for the Delaware Valley, the division treats the entire spectrum of injuries and injury-related disorders ranging from simple accidents arising from recreational, sport or domestic activities to the severest cases of multiple trauma. Due to the various levels of care provided, our division works closely with the Division of Trauma within the Department of General Surgery, as well as the Department of Neurosurgery, the Intensive Care Unit, and the Emergency Room.
Clinical and research activity is focused on the treatment of fractures in adults, severe injuries to joints and limbs, surgical treatment of injuries to the pelvis, hip socket and spine including minimally invasive and orthobiologic procedures. In addition, the division performs and studies a wide range of skeletal reconstructive surgical procedures including endoprosthetic techniques (e.g. hip prostheses and shoulder prostheses), as well as limb correctional procedures. The clinical care we provide includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Acute
- Severe fractures of the upper and lower extremities, including open and complex periarticular injuries
- Spinal fractures
- Pelvic and acetabular (hip socket) fractures
- Complex long bone (e.g., femur, tibia, humerus) fractures
- Polytrauma
- Hand and upper extremity services including microvascular surgery, arthroscopic surgery and reconstructive surgery
Complications/Chronic
- Nonunions (bones that do not heal)
- Malunions (bones that heal improperly)
- Infections and osteomyelitis
Another one of our "services" is advancing the orthopaedic trauma education of physicians and medical personnel – locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Our trauma faculty participate in regional educational conferences as well as furthering interaction at an international level. Furthermore, our collaborative approach to fracture care with orthopaedic surgeons, physiatrists, radiologists, physical and occupational therapists, nurses and social workers helps optimize patient outcomes.
The Division of Orthopaedic Trauma within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania is integrated in a strong interdisciplinary network of all other trauma related departments, which enables us to offer solutions to the most complex problems at the highest level of care.
