About the Program
In cooperation with the National Residency Matching Program,
Pennsylvania Hospital offers two first-year positions in the
Categorical Six-Year Training program. In addition, four preliminary
one-year positions are offered.
The residency program offers comprehensive training in all
areas of surgery, including general surgery, cardiothoracic
surgery, colorectal surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology
and vascular surgery, as well as the subspecialties of neurosurgery,
orthopaedics, otorhinolaryngology and urology. Candidates entering
the preliminary residency program are expected to continue
training either in surgical subspecialties or general surgery.
As the residency program advances, so too does each resident's
level of responsibility. The first years are spent with an
introduction to surgical techniques, surgical critical care
and patient management. A strong didactic conference schedule
is incorporated to provide a basic foundation of surgical knowledge.
Although one year of the program is dedicated to basic science
research, a strong emphasis is placed on clinical research
and residents are involved throughout the program in this aspect
of training. Both inpatient and outpatient experience is stressed.
In addition to the general surgery residency program, Pennsylvania
Hospital provides fellowship training in vascular surgery.
For information, see the next section.
