Introduction
The Administrative Fellowship program was established at Pennsylvania
Hospital (PAH) in the 1950s to provide qualified individuals
with a full and comprehensive training experience in health
care management, which would complement and enhance their foundations
from their academic programs. Each year (July 1 to June 30),
one Fellow is selected to participate in the PAH 12-month program.
Through hands-on-project management and participation in hospital
management, committees and the activities of senior management,
the Fellow is exposed to the clinical and operational departments
of the acute care setting. Attendance at meetings of the Administrative
Staff, Senior Staff and Professional Staff, among others, as
requested or directed, further augments the training experience.
Application to the Fellowship is open to those candidates
who have received their Master's degrees in health care administration,
business administration or public health, or to those candidates
who will receive their degrees upon completion of their residency.
Preference is given to applicants with prior work experience
in a hospital or health care environment.
The fellowship is largely self-directed in terms of project
selection, though several projects carry over from Fellow-to-Fellow
to ensure continuity and also to provide a broad sample of
the types of short-term and long-term initiatives and activities
encountered in hospital administration. Fellows are encouraged
to learn about all aspects of health care delivery and to seek
experience in areas they might be interested in pursuing after
completing their Fellowship program. This consists of experience
in, but is not limited to, the following:
- Finance
- Performance Improvement
- Patient Care Services
- Patient Satisfaction initiatives
- Patient Safety
- Research
- Community Affairs
- Special Projects (e.g., bed tracking, physician surveys, etc.)
Every Fellow attends the general new employee Orientation
to learn about Hospital history, benefits, departments, Standards
of Excellence and services. Additionally, a minimum two-week
Administration Fellowship Orientation is provided to introduce
the Fellow and to supply a more in-depth overview of PAH. This
Fellowship Orientation includes one-on-one meetings with:
- Members of the Operations Executive Council
- Executive Director
- Chief Operating Officer / Chief Nursing Officer
- Chief Medical Officer
- Senior Vice President of Professional Services
- Chief Human Resources Officer
- Director of Finance
- Associate Administrator
- Vice Presidents / Associate Vice Presidents
- Directors
- Others
The Preceptor for the Fellowship program is the Associate
Administrator.
