MedGen Residency

Division of Medical Genetics

Medical Genetics Residency

The University of Pennsylvania and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia support a primary residency in medical genetics. This 3-year program prepares individuals for Board-certification in Clinical Genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics. Applicants must have successfully completed at least 2 years in another primary residency (e.g., internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics, etc.) by the time they enter the Medical Genetics Residency. The curriculum of the Medical Genetics Residency can be tailored depending on the successful resident's preparation and interests. The typical curriculum followed by a fellow with training in pediatrics is outlined on the residency website.

Residents who have previous training in internal medicine will have much more intensive involvement in the genetics of cancer, adult-onset disorders, and neurogenetics. The program director is Haig H. Kazazian, Jr., M.D. The contact is Regina Harvey at harveyr@email.chop.edu.

Combined Internal Medicine-Medical Genetics Residency

We offer a 5-year combined residency in internal medicine and clinical genetics. The combined program saves 1 year in achieving Board-eligibility in both primary specialites. This residency is accredited by both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Medical Genetics. Please see the curriculum for the internal medicine residency. The curriculum for the medical genetics residency involves training in pediatric clinical genetics, metabolic genetics, cancer genetics, neurogenetics, prenatal genetics, clinical laboratory genetics (cytogenetics, molecular genetics and biochemical genetics) and other adult-onset familial disorders. The program director is Reed E. Pyeritz, MD, PhD.

Interested senior medical students must apply to both the internal medicine residency of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the medical genetic residency of the University of Pennsylvania. An interview for both programs can be scheduled on sequential days. For the internal medicine program, the process is described on the website noted above. For the medical genetics program contact Regina Harvey.
