Letter From The Chair
Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery is unique in that it combines the technical skill and knowledge of both surgery and medicine. The specialty encompasses a wide variety of simple to complex surgical and diagnostic procedures that are performed on patients ranging from newborns to the elderly. Our specialty also offers a broad range of exceptional opportunities for innovative basic and clinical research. The Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania is as unique as the specialty. The program provides both a large and well-balanced clinical load as well as an excellent research environment. We have a comprehensive Department and training program that covers all present and evolving aspects of our specialty. Supporting our program is a world renowned Medical Center with an excellent reputation for its clinical programs and for its dedication and success in molecular biology, immunology, genetics, and gene therapy research. The cornerstone of our program is the shared vision and relationship between our dedicated faculty, residents, and staff. While providing excellent and comprehensive clinical care is a key objective for our Department, our main goal is that of education and the advancement of our specialty. Our education mission centers on the residency program, and the priority of our residency program is to train outstanding clinicians and surgeons who have an in depth exposure and base line expertise in all areas of clinical Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. Our Department has a strong foundation on which to build and we are in an exciting period of growth and expansion. From the clinical standpoint, the Medical Center and our Departmental clinical practice are part of a large university owned Health System. The system is vertically and horizontally integrated and extends widely into the surrounding community. From the research standpoint the Department is currently one of the top grant funded otolaryngology departments nationally, and we provide expertise and mentoring in basic, translational, and clinical research. We also have a strong focus on the development of new technology for both the clinic and operating room setting. The large number, variety of clinical interests, and the expertise of the faculty at the different hospitals within the University of Pennsylvania training system, combined with the large volume of patients, provide the basis for an outstanding clinical training program. We are in the process of further expanding our faculty and have renovated and expanded our clinical and research space. Our continued growth and development is centered on the objective of enhancing our teaching curriculum. As a member of our Department and program, you will find both the faculty and fellow residents committed to a high level of excellence. Our residents are one of the primary strengths of our program and are an integral part of our past, present, and future success. We look forward to selecting the next residents who will become a part of this exciting and growing Department.
