INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWNLOADING AND VIEWING PICKER IMAGES
ON NUCMED MACS AND PCS
In the instructions below, phrases that you
type are in bold font. Hit the Return key after each line.
STEP 1. COPY FILES FROM PICKER COMPUTER TO MAC OR PC
ON MACS
Use the Fetch program to copy files:
- At any Mac select Fetch from the Apple Menu or Launcher.
If the New Connection... window doesn't open, select New Connection
from the File menu. Click and hold on the arrow next to the word
Shortcuts: and select the Picker computer containing the files.
If a shortcut doesn't exist, then in the Host: blank, type the
name of the Picker computer followed by .pet.uphs.upenn.edu,
e.g. prism21.pet.uphs.upenn.edu. For User ID: type petuser
then the standard petuser password. Then click the OK
button
- Click the radio button next to Binary on the bottom of the
resulting window. Locate and highlight the file(s) you want to
transfer. (Hold Apple key down to click more than one file).
Unfortunately none of the programs currently on our Macs can
display Picker lightboxes, so don't bother getting any files
starting with a capital L. The contents of lightboxes can be
translated to a more-readable format using the xv program. See
"Procedure for using
xv to convert Picker images to Mac- or PC-readable format"
for details.
- Click the Get Files... button. You will be prompted where
to save the files. Please store them in your individual folder
in the Users folder.
- Once files are transferred to your Mac (when mouse cursor
no longer becomes a running dog when moved into the Fetch window)
you can close the connection and exit Fetch by select Quit from
the File menu.
ON PCS
Use the WS_FTP LE program to copy files:
- Select WS_FTP LE from the Start -> Programs menu. In the
resulting Session Properties window, click on the arrow to the
right of the Session Name: and look for a shortcut. If there
isn't one, then click the New button and in the Hostname: blank
fill in the complete name of the Picker computer containing the
files (e.g. prism21.pet.uphs.upenn.edu). For User ID: type petuser
then the standard petuser password and click the OK button.
- In the WS_FTP LE window make sure the Binary radio button
is selected, then click the Connect button.
- The files of your local computer appear on the left side
of the window. Please store files in a folder with your name
on it in the Users folder. Navigate until that directory appears
on the left. Once the connection is established, the files of
the Picker computer will appear on the right side of the window.
Highlight the files you want to copy. (Use the Ctrl key to select
multiple files.) Displaying native Picker files on PCs is complex.
It is easier to convert them into a more common format such as
a GIF or TIFF. Please see"Procedure
for using xv to convert Picker images to Mac- or PC-readable
format" for details. Once files are selected, click
the leftward-pointing arrow in the middle to start the transfer.
- As files are copied they will appear in the left-side of
the window. When you are finished, click the Exit button.
STEP 2. VIEW FILES
ON MACS
The next step depends on the file type:
If the file is a GIF or TIFF file
A simple way to view these files is to start a Web browser (e.g.
Netscape or Internet Explorer) then drag the icon of the file
over the browser window and let go. If you want to manipulate
the image, though, try GraphicConverter or PowerPoint (both GIF
or TIFF) or NucMed_Image (TIFF only). In GraphicConverter select
Open.. from the File menu. In PowerPoint select Insert-> Picture->
From File. In NucMed_Image, select Import... from the File menu
then make sure the TIFF radio button is selected before clicking
Open.
If the file is a "native" Picker file
Picker file names consist of a capital letter followed by a number,
e.g. T4. For those files, go under the Apple menu and select NucMed_Image.
Go to the right-most menu labelled NucMed and select Translate
-> Picker Odyssey images... You'll be prompted for the location
of the file. Locate and highlight the file then click the Open
button. In the next window leave the maximum pixel value unchanged
-- just click OK. If you have multiple views, e.g. Anterior and
Posterior, the first one will be displayed. To move to the next
image type Apple+. (that's a period) or under the Stacks menu
select "Next Slice >". To move to the previous image
type Apple+, (a comma) or under the Stacks menu select "Previous
Slice <".
ON PCS
If the file is a GIF or TIFF file
A simple way to view these files is to start a Web browser (e.g.
Netscape or Internet Explorer) then drag the icon of the file
over the browser window and let go. If you want to manipulate
the image, though, try PowerPoint: Select Insert-> Picture->
From File.
If the file is a "native" Picker file
The freeware program Osiris can display Picker files given the
correct parameters for file header size, width and height, data
type, and number of images. For all images except lightboxes these
are, respectively, 2048, the acquisition matrix size, and 16 bits
unsigned "swapped" byte order. For lightboxes, the values
are 2136, usually 1024 by 1023, 8 bits unsigned.
