The purpose of the PGY1 residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. We aim to provide training opportunities and learning experiences in a direct patient care environment that prepare the resident to assume a position as a patient-centered practitioner in an acute care hospital, or to pursue a PGY2 in a specialized area.
HUP is a university-teaching hospital with a patient centered pharmacy practice model. This practice model is integrated within interdisciplinary care teams, and is capable of providing experience in evidence based pharmaceutical care plans, education of patients and healthcare providers, project management with the medication use process, and applied clinical research. The residency is individualized and develops self-assessment skills necessary for professional practice.
