Breast Imaging

Breast MRI

The Breast Imaging Division, accredited by the American College of Radiology, provides screening and problem-solving multi-modality imaging for outpatients at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and its satellites. The basic examination utilizes state-of-the-art, 3D digital mammographic equipment with the capability for supplemental clarification with magnification and spot compression.

Hand-held, high-resolution ultrasound examinations are utilized, when appropriate, for differentiation of cystic from solid lesions and to further evaluate areas of concern on breast exam. When necessary, needle localizations are performed in conjunction with outpatient surgical biopsy. As an alternative to needle localization and excisional biopsy, stereotactic, ultrasound-guided or MRI guided large core needle biopsies are performed when appropriate.
