Small Animal Imaging Facility

New Acquisitions

65 mm dynamically detunable TEM coil: The PO for a dynamically detunable volume coil suitable for imaging rats and mice was generated in the first week of July 2005. The order was placed with Insight Neuroimaging Systems and projected delivery time is 4 weeks. This coil may be used for both transmit/receive or as a transmit only coil in combination with a suitable recieve only surface coil. The circuitry necessary for dynamic detuning was included in the order.

9.4T Horizontal Bore system: The PO for the 9.4T 30 cm horizontal bore magnet was placed in the first week of July 2005. Delivery time for this device is projected to be 12 months. The magnet will be installed in the John Morgan building in the space adjacent to the high resolution MRS lab (the old cafeterial space). Preparation of the space for the arrival of the magent is schedualed to begin in August of 2005.

Animal Imaging Lab in the John Morgan Building

Plans are underway to consolidate the Sub-Cores of the SAIF into a newly renovated imaging laboratory on the first floor of the John Morgan Building. This facility will provide optical, ultrasound and MR imaging and a small animal surgical suite for small animals as well as animal housing. The optical and ultrasound instrumentation currently available in SAIF will be relocated to the new site when construction is complete. A state-of-the-art 9.4T 30 cm MRI system will be installed in the new SAIF laboratory. Construction plans for the laboratory have been finalized and construction is scheduled to begin in March 2006. The new SAIF central imaging laboratory is scheduled to open its doors in December 2006.
