Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship
Description
The musculoskeletal section of the Department of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania offers a one-year fellowship in musculoskeletal imaging. Two individuals are selected each year.
The fellow will receive training in plain film radiography, arthrography musculoskeletal MRI, CT, and bone biopsy procedures including the spine. Instruction includes one on one read out sessions with the musculoskeletal staff, small twice-weekly Musculoskeletal MRI conferences, conferences with Orthopedic Surgery and Rheumatology. The fellows will participate in the resident conferences, which are held 6 times a month. The fellow is responsible for sharing consultations with emergency room personnel during the day and to participate in review sessions with the staff radiologist and resident as well. The fellow has an opportunity during the year to teach residents during their regular weekly conference, and mini-conferences within the section and also has the opportunity to teach medical students in monthly conferences. The fellow will participate in the MRI evening call and will also rotate through Body MRI. All fellows are strongly encouraged to be involved in research projects.
Research
The section conducts research in musculoskeletal biomechanics and in using MRI to evaluate osteoporosis. To study the micro-architecture of trabecular bone, we have developed a technique that assesses its structure quantitatively.
The Clinical Service and Equipment
We have a very active department of orthopedics and emergency room, and
interpret a high number of plain film examinations encompassing the full range
of musculoskeletal pathology.
We annually conduct more than 13,000 clinical MR examinations covering the full
spectrum of musculoskeletal, neuroradiologic, cardiac, abdominal,
peripheral-vascular, and pelvic cases. The MR section's equipment consists of
six 1.5 Tesla whole body instruments. We also now have a 1.5 T Siemens magnet devoted
full-time to research imaging, two smaller bore animal systems (1.9 T, 4.7 T),
and a Signa simulator for pulse programming.
We perform 12, 230 body CT examinations annually, with 3 multislice and 2 single detector scanners.
All CT and MRI examinations are interpreted on Sun Workstations using
GE Advantage software.
We perform arthrography using state-of-the-art Phillips digital
fluoroscopy rooms.
Educational Resources
Our current schedule includes Musculoskeletal MRI case review Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday, a conference primarily for the benefit of the
musculoskeletal fellow and the MRI fellows. The musculoskeletal fellow may
attend any departmental conference, clinical schedule permitting. Among the
other conferences of the MRI section are MRA conference on Tuesday, and
Abdominal MRI conference on Thursday. There is an MRI follow-up conference on
Monday, as well as optional training in MR physics.
Our Center for Continuing Education contains an
extensive videotape library (and carrels for viewing), teaching files, and a
large library of educational software developed at our institution. The
continuing education program in MR is quite popular, attracting physicians
worldwide to week-long visiting fellowships throughout the year. The
musculoskeletal fellow may use the full resources of the center and participate
in its seminar programs.
Additionally, we have an extensive plain film teaching file, so that our
residents and fellows may learn the appearance of rarer musculoskeletal
pathologies and may learn the variety of appearances which more familiar
diseases may manifest.
