WOMEN'S IMAGING FELLOWSHIP
Overview
The Women's Imaging fellowship provides training in all aspects of Women's Imaging, including mammography, sonography, MRI, and interventional procedures. Two one-year positions are available each year. The fellow spends half of the year in the Breast Imaging section. The remainder of the year is divided between MRI and sonography.
Breast Imaging
The
fellow, under the attending supervision, performs a wide range of biopsy
procedures including stereotactic biopsies, ultrasound guided core biopsies,
needle localization under both mammographic and ultrasound guidance. The
fellow also actively participates in mammographic interpretation and diagnostic
sonographic evaluation. There is active didactic teaching on the clinical
service. There are 6 attending on the service, which gives the fellow
exposure to a wide range of styles and approaches to mammographic interpretation.
The fellow is responsible for organizing the weekly mammographic -pathology
conference. During the conference, we discuss interesting biopsy proven
cases with pathologic correlation provided by the Pathology department.
The fellow also may be involved in resident teaching with the attending
overseeing the fellow.
The goal of the fellowship is to train top-notch individuals in the field
of Women's Imaging, highly qualified for private practice or to enter
an academic career. Our fellows are highly sought after in the job market.
We perform over 13,00 screening examinations and approximately 9,000 diagnostic
examinations
per year. The screening center is located at the Penn Tower Hotel, across
the street from the main hospital. The diagnostic center is located at
the main hospital. There is a full complement of film screen mammogram
units, including 2 full field GE digital machines, one with tomosynthesis
capability. In addition, at the diagnostic center, there are 2 ultrasound
machines (GE and Siemens) and a LoRad Multicare Platinum Stereotactic
unit.
Many mentored research opportunities are available on the Breast Imaging
service. Multiple breast imaging related research activities are ongoing
in the Department including tomosynthesis, ultrasound and MRI research.
Fellows are strongly encouraged to participate a project.
Ultrasound and MRI
On the ultrasound and MRI portion of the fellowship, the fellow functions at the same level as the other fellows on the service. The ultrasound portion of the fellowship takes place in the Body Imaging section. On the MRI portion of the fellowship, the fellow will have the opportunity to learn to interpret breast MRI examinations as well to perform MRI guided biopsy procedures. For additional information on this portion of the fellowship, please refer to the MRI and Body Imaging fellowship sites.
