Course Description

Six-Month Internships in MRI, a competency-based program, is a full-time internship that combines clinical with didactic information and is intended for those technologists who are serious about pursuing a career in MRI.

Course curricula & clinical competency follows guidelines of the Association of Educators in Imaging and Radiologic Sciences (AEIRS) and the Section for Magnetic Resonance Technologists (SMRT). The objective of the six-month internship, is to provide the technologist with a firm understanding of the principles of MRI (the didactic) as well as clinical experience (the clinical practicum). Upon completion of this program the technologist will be prepared to pass the MR boards and gain employment in MRI.

The didactic portion of this course includes numerous lectures on all aspects of MRI including physics, anatomy, procedures and pathology.

The clinical practicum includes 19 weeks or 665 hours of clinical imaging. Clinical rotations are completed at:

  • Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP):

    • Four 1.5T Siemens Espree
    • One 1.5T Siemens Avanto
    • Two 3T Siemens Trio
    • Two 1.5T Siemens Verio
    • One 1.5T Siemens Essenza
    • One 1.5T Siemens Sonata
    • One 3T Siemens Skyra
  • The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP):

    • Three 1.5T Siemens systems
    • Two 3.0T Siemens Trio
  • Penn Medicine Radnor:

    • One 1.5T Signa Excite HD
  • Penn Medicine Valley Forge:

    • One 1.5T GE 450W
  • Penn Medicine Bucks County:

    • One 1.5T Siemens Espree

Course Dates

  • Fall Semester: September through February

  • Spring Semester: March through August

Requirements for Acceptance

The minimum requirement for acceptance into the MRI internship program is that the applicant be registered by the ARRT in either Radiography (R.T. (R)), Nuclear Medicine (R.T. (N)), or in Radiation Therapy (R.T. (RT)). Subsequent to the internship, the technologist will be required to take the Advanced level examination in MRI offered by the ARRT.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until classes are full.

Complete Online:

  • Application form
  • Two letters of recommendations
  • Upload ARRT scores for radiography exam (if applicable)
  • HealthcareSource Applicant Survey (a link for the survey will be emailed to the applicant once the online application is submitted)

Send via Mail:

  • Application fee – $75. Check or money order made payable to HUP – RT Education. Fee is nonrefundable.
  • Official transcript from radiography school (in a sealed envelope received directly from the institution)

Applicants will be notified when the RT Education Office receives the applicant's transcript and application fees.

Upon receipt of the items listed above, the applicant will then be scheduled for an interview with the program director.

General Internship Information

  • Application Fee:
    $75.00 check or money order payable at time of submission to "HUP – RT Education". Fee is non-refundable.

  • Tuition:
    $4,500 ($500 deposit upon acceptance. The remainder is to be paid in monthly installments during the course of the program). Tuition assistance is the responsibility of the Student Applicant. Tuition is subject to change.

  • Books:
    Books are the responsibility of the student and will be listed during the orientation.
