Application Process and Interviews


Application Policies and Procedures

Current Resident

Applicants are selected on the basis of academic and personal qualifications without regard to race, sex, age, marital status, religion, sexual orientation or national origin. All applications to our program must be submitted through ERAS – The Electronic Residency Application Service. To help anyone unfamiliar with ERAS procedures, we have provided a link to ERAS from our main menu.

We download ERAS materials very frequently, typically daily. ERAS will provide each applicant with a receipt when we have downloaded his/her documents; since we find this to be very reliable, there is no need for any applicant to contact us directly to confirm that we have received his/her application materials.

Applications to our program are accepted each year from the opening of the ERAS post office, which occurs on September 1, through November 6. If an application is submitted or completed after this date, we will try to review it and consider you, but please understand that we may not be able to do so. We require the following elements to consider your application complete:

  1. application form
  2. personal statement
  3. photograph
  4. MSPE (Medical Student Performance Evaluation) – the “Dean’s Letter”
  5. transcript from medical school
  6. 3 other letters of recommendation. Letters may be submitted by any professionals who know you best. We do not require a letter from a radiologist or from the chair of radiology at your medical school. You may submit more than 3 letters if you wish.
  7. USMLE (or equivalent) Step 1 score. We will accept COMLEX scores, but we urge our osteopathic applicants to also submit a USMLE Step 1 score.
  8. USMLE (or equivalent) Step 2 CK score, if available. For those applicants who have yet to take USMLE Step 2 CK, please indicate on the application the date when you will take this examination.

We have no additional requirements, and we consider each applicant individually. Any applicant with questions about visas should address them directly with the Office of Graduate Medical Education of the hospital.

Current Resident

Since we wish to be fair to all applicants and since we wish to gain the fullest possible picture of each applicant, we do not offer interview appointments until early November. Interviews are conducted on selected days of each interview season in December and January. Applicants are invited by e-mail, and appointments are made on a first-come basis. Unfortunately, we are unable to meet or interview applicants who have not been invited through this process. Appointments must be made ONLY by telephone contact with our coordinator so that she can obtain some required information in preparation for your visit. If you cannot reach her when you call, please understand that this is a very busy time; please leave a voice message including the best time and phone number to call you back; she will return your call as soon as she is able. You are also welcome to try calling her again, particularly if you will not be available to receive her call-back. Since dates fill quickly, applicants are advised to make appointments promptly.

All positions are filled through the NRMP (National Residency Matching Program). Their policies and procedures are explained on their website: www.nrmp.org.

The Interview Day

Pennsylvania Hospital is located in downtown Philadelphia at 800 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107. Directions to Pennsylvania Hospital. Applicants have the option to attend an informal reception hosted by our residents at a nearby restaurant on the evening prior to their interview. The actual interview is planned to provide each applicant with an informative and enjoyable experience, which lasts a full morning or afternoon. The agenda starts with a program overview. Each candidate will then have separate private interviews with the program director, the department chair and the chief residents. The applicant group will also observe a typical noon conference, tour our beautiful, historically important facility and enjoy lunch with some of our residents and staff.
