The University of Pennsylvania is the only academic medical center in the Delaware Valley to have the depth and breadth of clinical expertise to support a separate Genitourinary (GU) Radiology Section. Members of our Section perform a wide variety of diagnostic and interventional procedures on patients with known or suspected GU diseases. They also consult on, and coordinate for patients and referring physicians the imaging studies that are performed in the Ultrasound, CT, MRI and Nuclear Medicine Sections, both at our institution and at other hospitals or imaging centers in the Delaware Valley.

The diagnostic imaging studies performed in our Section evaluate the anatomy and function of the upper (kidneys and ureters) and lower (bladder and urethra) urinary tracts in patients with hematuria (blood in the urine), known or suspected malignancy, urinary stone disease, urinary fistulas, or voiding dysfunction. A state-of-the-art program to evaluate and treat urinary incontinence and other abnormalities of urination is conducted in conjunction with the Divisions of Urology and Urogynecology.

Our GU Radiologists perform both diagnostic (hysterosalpingography) and interventional (fallopian tube recanalization) procedures for women with infertility.

The Section pioneered the development of interventional uroradiology over 20 years ago and continues to perform a wide variety of non-vascular interventional procedures for patients with their own (native) kidneys or with transplanted kidneys. These procedures include percutaneous nephrostomy, ureteral stent placement and removal, dilation of urinary tract narrowings or strictures, ablation or obliteration of cysts and other fluid collections in or around the kidney (including lymphoceles), and a variety of non-surgical interventional procedures related to urinary tract stone disease.

If you (the patient) scheduled the appointment, you will need to bring the referring physician's prescription (signature) to the examination.
