Scheduled Test: CYST ASPIRATION (BREAST)

| Where: | You will report to outpatient radiology reception (first floor Silverstein building). Look for signs to outpatient radiology reception area where you are to check in. |
| Purpose: | This procedure provides aspiration of a cyst without removal of the cyst through surgical operation. |
| Preparation: | Since this is not a surgical procedure there are no eating or drinking restrictions required.
Medications can be taken prior to your test with the exception of aspirin. If aspirin is consumed within 48 hours prior to the procedure please inform the radiologist Allergies to lidocaine (numbing medication) should be discussed with the radiologist prior to the procedure so that an alternative medication may be used. |
| Procedure: | This procedure can take between 15-45 minutes depending on complexity of the cyst.
You will be asked to change into a hospital gown designed specifically for mammogram procedures. Your clothes will be stored in a locker; the key will be given to you. The radiologist will locate the cyst through either ultrasound or mammography. Once this area is located the radiologist will numb the area of interest. A small needle will be inserted into the cyst and the cyst fluid will be drained into a syringe. If necessary, this fluid will then by evaluated by a Pathologist. |
| After Care: | After the procedure you may resume your normal activities.
