Patient Prep & Instruction Manual

Updated May 2006

Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Department of Radiology            3400 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104

Scheduled Test: PROSTASCINT STUDY

When:_____________ Date:_____________ Time:_____________

Where: Nuclear Medicine, 3rd floor Donner Building

Purpose: To evaluate prostate cancer recurrence and/or metastasis to lymph nodes

Preparation: No preparation is needed prior to injection.

Day 4: On the day prior to the delayed images (day 4), you will need to take a laxative. Magnesium Citrate (available at any pharmacy) is suggested. You must consume the contents of the entire bottle over the course of the day.

Day 5: On the morning of day 5 (before you come to the hospital) you will need to administer a Fleet's enema.

Procedure: A needle will be placed in one of the veins found in your arm. After a baseline blood pressure reading is established, you will be injected with the prostascint tracer through the IV line. We will take blood pressure readings for 15-20 minutes after the injection.

Thirty-to-sixty minutes later, we will take a set of images of your pelvis and abdomen. This set of pictures will take approximately 45 minutes. For these pictures, you will be laying comfortably on your back.

You will return 5 days later for the first set of delayed images. This imaging session will take approximately 2 hours, so wear something comfortable.

It is quite possible that you will be asked to return the next day for a set of images that should take about an hour.

After Care: You may resume your normal lifestyle.

Questions: If you have any questions about your scheduled test, please contact the Nuclear Medicine Department at 215-662-3076.
