Scheduled Test: Prostate Ultrasound
| When:_____________ | Date:_____________ | Time:_____________ |
| Where: | You will report to Main Radiology Reception (Ground Floor/Dulles Building). Look for signs to the Radiology Reception area where you are to check in.
| Purpose: | This examination provides a detailed image of your prostate. The scan is safe and most patients find it to be painless. There is no radiation involved.
| Preparation: | A Fleets enema must be taken 1-4 hours prior to the examination. If your Doctor requests a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test, please arrange to have it drawn prior to your ultrasound examination or on another day.
| Procedure: | The examination usually takes approximately 15-20 minutes. You will be asked to change into a gown and provide us with a brief history. You will then be placed on a stretcher and asked to lie on your left side. A plastic device called a transducer, which has been specifically designed for this particular study, will be placed into your rectum. These transducers are sterilized between patients and covered with a non-latex sheath during the examination. Many patients find this study similar to the digital rectal examination performed in their physician’s office.
| After Care: | After the test, you may resume all normal activities. Your attending physician will discuss the results of your ultrasound examination with you.
