Scheduled Test: THYROID UPTAKE AND SCAN

Where: Nuclear Medicine, 3rd floor Donner Building

Purpose: To evaluate the thyroid glands function and structure.

Contrindications: You must not receive x-ray contrast up to 6 weeks prior to your exam.

Preparation: Low iodine diet for 1-2 weeks prior, nothing by mouth the morning of test.

Procedure: You will be given a capsule of a very small amount of radioactive Iodine.

If you are being evaluated for an Overactive Thyroid (Hyperthyroidism), approximately 2 hours later you will return for the first uptake determination as well as four Images of your Thyroid— this will take approximately 20-30 minutes: you will also return the following day for a second uptake determination.

For under active thyroid (Hypothyroidism) or for thyroid nodule evaluation you will only return the day following the capsule for an uptake and the images.

After Care: You may resume your normal lifestyle.
