Ahmed Bilal Ashraf is Post-doctoral Researcher in the Computational Breast Imaging Group at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He has experience in machine learning, computer vision, and image processing. Ahmed currently works on developing non-invasive bioimaging markers for breast cancer prognosis and personalized treatment. Earlier, Ahmed's doctoral research revolved around learning data-driven feature representations for optimal object classification, object tracking/alignment, viewpoint invariant face recognition, and facial expression recognition.

Research Interests:

Application of machine learning to spatio-temporal image understanding and segmentation for breast cancer prognosis and personalized treatment using Dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) MRI as the imaging modality.

Current Research Topics:

  • Prediction of prognostic tumor gene expression signatures via kinetic analysis of DEC-MRI for assessing breast cancer recurrence. The measure of recurrence is a validated reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay, Oncotype DX (Genomic Health Inc.), that measures the expression of 21 genes in RNA from formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue.
  • Automated classification of node negative and node positive breast cancer using DCE MRI Images.
  • MRI biomarkers for breast tumor microenvironment as assessed by immunohistochemical (IHC) profiling of tumor associated fibroblasts (TAF) obtained from fresh frozen samples of human normal breast and malignant breast tissue.
