Scanner Facility

In 2009, the PET Imaging Facility expanded to include scanners at both the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.

The facility in HUP has two scanner rooms, two control rooms, a patient injection/uptake room, two patient uptake areas, a Physican reading room, and a hot lab. The facility in the Perelman Center has a scanner room, a control room, a patient injection/uptake room, and a hot lab.

Geminis

The Geminis are PET/CT instruments with intrinsic spatial resolution of 4.7 mm, and LYSO crystals that lead to improved energy resolution of 12% and higher sensitivity, than the previous GSO systems. With these faster crystals we achieve a system timing resolution of approximately 600 ps, which enables time-of-flight (TOF) measurement.

The TOF information along with physical data corrections (e.g. scatter, attenuation) are included in the system model of the ML-EM list-mode algorithm which is used for image reconstruction. Attenuation correction and anatomical registration are provided by the 16-slice Brilliance CT scanner.

Allegro

The Allegro is a PET-only instrument with an intrinsic spatial resolution of 4.8 mm. The scanner operates in 3D (no septa) utilizing a fully 3D iterative algorithm (3D-RAMLA) for image reconstruction.

The GSO crystals achieve 16% energy resolution. Attenuation correction relies on a transmission scan performed in singles acquisition mode using a Cs-137 point source.
