Chairman's Corner

Dear Applicant:

Thank you for your interest in our Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Training Program. Our program is listed with ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). We only accept program applications via ERAS (www.aamc.org/students/eras/start.htm). We request that applications be submitted no later than November 11, 2006.

The goal of our Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Training Program is to promote the individual growth of our residents by providing an organized educational program, which will encourage their development as expert clinical and academic physiatrists.

The growth of our residents is promoted in accordance with the mission of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, which is to provide for the health care of its patients, serve as a clinical facility for the education of health professionals, and support the research activities of its medical staff and the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania Health System facilities: Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), Phoenixville Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital, Pennsylvania Hospital, and Penn at Radnor. Our residents train at HUP, Presbyterian Hospital, and Pennsylvania Hospital as well as Childrens Seashore House of the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which are located on the University of Pennsylvania campus.

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is organized into medical subspecialty divisions: General Rehabilitation, Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, Interventional Spine Care, Cancer Rehabilitation, Neurorehabilitation, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, Functional Outcomes and Electrodiagnosis. Our faculty provide a high quality level of education and patient care interdependently and also in collaboration with other HUP Departments. All of our faculty have ongoing research projects and compete for extramural federal and private foundation research funding. Faculty research provides the resident with the opportunity to participate in research under the guidance of a faculty mentor.

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Training Program offers an ACGME fully accredited four-year residency (PGY 1-4 levels) in the specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

The HUP Housestaff salaries and benefits are commensurate with other major teaching hospitals in the Philadelphia area. The benefits package includes malpractice insurance, long term disability insurance, medical/ prescription drug plan, dental, vision, employee life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and dependent care and health care spending account.

The Residency Selection Committee will review your application materials when your file is complete. After the initial screening of the applications, candidates will be selected to interview with the faculty and residents. Interview Days will be held in November, December, and January. Candidates must be eligible for medical licensure in Pennsylvania on an entry training level 2.
