There is considerable evidence that the immune response can be harvested and utilized to fight cancer. There are cancer vaccines made from the patients own white blood cells that are specifically activated out of the body to be returned as a vaccine. We have several active clinical trials available within the department that are aimed at activating the immune response. These include trials in melanoma and breast cancer currently and there are plans to open additional trials in patients with gastrointestinal tumors such as pancreatic cancer.
