Lumpectomy is a breast cancer surgery. The surgeon removes the cancer and a portion of normal tissue beyond it. Removing some normal tissue is to be sure all the margins are free of cancer. This is called having clear, or negative margins. Sometimes the margins are not cleared on the first surgery and a re-excision lumpectomy is done at another date to get negative margins. This is an outpatient procedure.
