Jeremy Cannon, MD, SM, FACS has joined Penn Medicine in the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Emergency Medicine after completing his military service in the US Air Force as the Chief of Trauma & Critical Care at San Antonio Military Medical Center, the DoD’s only Level I trauma center.

Dr. Cannon was a Distinguished Graduate of the US Air Force Academy, received his Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School, and completed his General Surgery Residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, MA. During a 2-year research fellowship at Children’s Hospital Boston, he also earned a Master’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering from MIT. He completed a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Children’s Hospital Boston and is board certified in surgery and surgical critical care.

During his active duty military service, Dr. Cannon was deployed to Iraq in 2007 and to Afghanistan in 2009 and 2010-2011 as a combat surgeon. In 2011, he was awarded the Paul W. Myers Award as the top medical officer in the US Air Force. He is currently a Colonel select in the US Air Force Reserves and is serving as a combat casualty care investigator assigned to the 60 MDG, Travis Air Force Base, California.

Dr. Cannon has research interests in trauma resuscitation and extracorporeal support for lung rescue. He was recruited to continue and strengthen the long tradition of military collaboration at Penn Medicine, to join the burgeoning research effort on advanced resuscitation at Penn, and to participate in the Penn Medicine lung rescue program.
