Dr. Mascio is an attending cardiothoracic surgeon at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.  He received his undergraduate degree at the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree at Loyola University Chicago.  Dr. Mascio remained at Loyola University Chicago to complete his general surgery residency.  He then continued training as a Ruth L Kirschstein National Research Service Award Research Fellow at the University of Iowa.  He completed his cardiothoracic residency at the University of Iowa before moving on to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for fellowship training in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery.  Dr. Mascio joined the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Louisville in 2006 and remained there until accepting an appointment at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 2013. 

Dr. Mascio performs the full range of congenital heart operations including neonatal reconstructive surgery, cardiothoracic transplantation, mechanical support for heart failure, and adult congenital heart surgery.  His research interests include patient outcome analysis utilizing the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database and the cardiothoracic surgical database at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.  He is a member of the Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Society and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Patient Safety Workforce.
